Monocle Rosa, The Don't Fucking Cares
93 Feet East
24th July 2009

This is a great venue but it's surprisingly empty on a Hot Wednesday night - I can't help thinking the promoter could have tried a little harder. Maybe half the admission or cheaper bar prices, because this could be a great scene - and change the DJ - they were playing salsa ! between bands!
The Don't Fucking Cares are their usual indifferent, arrogant selves to night, stepping on stage with studied nonchalance. They kick off with The Rest is Just Noise, a slamming riff - reminiscent of Mudhoney with maybe an hint of Arctic Monkeys. Then straight into new single Underage Demon a bluesy yet mechanistic beat. Imagine Iggy doing krautrock and you're in the right area. Download a tale of sordid behavior Lou Reed could be proud of, starts with a chord change that reminds me of the Beach boys - if they were on heroin. They end the set with a climatic version on Speedtrap, no covers tonight.
Monocle Rose have problems - Richie breaks two strings in the first song and has to use an unwieldy spare guitar. Its not until Alley cat that the band hits its stride - a lean manic 's style riff & boogie. The promised crowds don't emerge but an anthemic Tired of London lifts everyone. The song has a cinematic feel with strong Suede style power chords. Feedback problems persist and after six songs the band call it quits, if this bunch of youngsters can keep their nerve they'll make it.

1. Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
The most subversive album ever made - dirty weird sounds and linear beats, up from the sleazy back street world of New York's avant garde - packed with new ideas, art trash experiments and feedback. This album invented the concept of underground rock! like finding a bag of smack in the back of a taxi.

2. Raw Power - Iggy Pop & The Stooges
Rude, crude and dangerous to know the Stooges most aggressive album. Needle sharp guitar riffs and Iggy's best ever street loser lyrics - Search & Destroy, Penetration, Raw power and James Williamson's demented guitaring!

3. Never Mind The Bollocks - The Sex Pistols
The anthems that rebuilt the UK, snarling vicious barbs of lyrics and breeze block wall of rhythm guitar. Blood snot and anarchy - the real thing!

4. The Clash - The Clash.
Broken glass guitars and amphetamine burns - the sound of lonely alienation under the Westway. Anti-apathy, anti-boredom message that turns all that aggression into something positive. White Riot, London's Burning and Garageland - classics all.

5. In Utero - Nirvana
Twisted sulking soul-fired anger and dreamy heroin fueled daydreams, there is no finer example of alienated youth ever recorded. Slabs of bass, great drums and the best vocal howl of all time.

6. Marquee Moon - Television
Crystal shards of guitar, New York latenight underground cool, poetry and ice cold solos. Razorlight nicked their stuff from here, even Tom Verlaine's strangled vocal sound.

7. 1st - The Gun Club;
Jeffery Lee Pierce's visionary epics, burning guitars, violent delta blues & voodoo malice - the razors edge! They got there before the White Stripes.

8. Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan;
60s suburban amphetamine blues. The multi layered word miester, intellectual, articulate rapping before its time. Black shades N/Y cool, Like a Rolling Stone defines the era.

9. Venus Luxure No 1 Baby - Girls Vs Boys;
Sordid nasty dirty funk - the Stooges taking downers in a disco! In like Flynn and Bulletproof Cupid are all edged with filth.

10. Vol.4 - Black Sabbath;
Riffzilla from the dark lords, D tuned monsters of songs- Supernaught, Snowblind and Wheels of Confusion represent an avalanche of riff, proggy but fun.

one for the road…
